Cha Duk Chang Store: A Poetic Fusion of Art, Culture, and Space

A Multi-Functional Workspace Designed by LX Studio International Limited

LX Studio International Limited was tasked with designing a new multifunctional workspace for the Cha Duk Chang Children’s Cantonese Opera Association at The Mills in Hong Kong. The result is a stunning integration of ornamented art installation with culture and space.

LX Studio International Limited, renowned for their innovative designs, has once again pushed the boundaries of creativity with their latest project, the Cha Duk Chang Store. This new multi-functional workspace, located at The Mills in Hong Kong, is a testament to the studio's ability to seamlessly blend art, architecture, and design.

The inspiration for the design came from the rich heritage of Cantonese Opera. The architect, in collaboration with the Cha Duk Chang Children’s Cantonese Opera Association, sought to create a space that not only pays homage to the elegance of traditional Cantonese Opera headdress but also captures the essence of various Bamboo Theatres.

The standout feature of the Cha Duk Chang Store is the mesmerizing bamboo art ceiling. This intricate installation serves as a guiding path, leading visitors to explore the headdress exhibition area and the internal multi-functional workspace. The ceiling design, a combination of art installation and parametric design, presented unique challenges. However, with the help of digital design technologies, LX Studio International Limited was able to analyze curvature data and produce an accurate setting out, saving valuable on-site construction time.

With a total construction area of 1,650 square feet, the Cha Duk Chang Store offers a range of facilities, including cafes, an exhibition zone, a classroom, and a workspace. The use of bamboo throughout the space creates a natural color tone backdrop, seamlessly blending the store into its architectural context and the surrounding environment.

The project, which began in June 2018, was completed in December of the same year. The attention to detail and the integration of art, culture, and space make the Cha Duk Chang Store a truly unique and inspiring design.

LX Studio International Limited's exceptional work on the Cha Duk Chang Store has not gone unnoticed. The design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious accolade recognizes the studio's commitment to incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, ultimately contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With the Cha Duk Chang Store, LX Studio International Limited has once again proven their ability to create spaces that go beyond functionality, offering visitors an immersive experience that celebrates art, culture, and innovation.
